The 5th Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific was held from 28 to 29 March in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The meeting's theme was "Achieving Environmentally Sustainable Economic Growth.". The Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific was held from 31 August to 5 September in Kitakyushu, Japan. The Conference was attended by participants at the Ministerial level from countries in the ESCAP region and beyond. Asia and the Pacific have already pioneered the concept of green growth in Green growth – as a pre-requisite for building a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty reduction – was brought into the context of intergovernmental discussions for the first time at the Fifth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development (MCED) in Asia and the Pacific held in in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

The concept of green growth has its origins in the Asia and Pacific Region. At the Fifth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development (MCED) held in March in Seoul, 52 Governments and other stakeholders from Asia and the Pacific agreed to move beyond the sustainable development rhetoric and pursue a path of "green growth".
